Update from Cheryl

I am currently uploading more pictures and adding the finishing touches to my blog. I was not able to make it the last museum on my tentative schedule, the Guggenheim in New York, but I did visit all of the others for a total of five museums and in one case, I went to the same museum twice. I have really enjoyed this experience. I was most impressed with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I have invited a few friends and my entire immediate family to a trip to New York this summer just to visit this fantastic museum. I hope all of you enjoyed this class as much as I did. Don't forget to take a look at my blog when you get a chance and good luck to all.

Museum 6: The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Well class...here's my final post, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. I have been pleasantly suprised with the last couple of art museums I've visited. Jerry, I got off to a late start, but this class was a great experience! I don't that I would have gone to Ridgefield had it not been for this class! Thanks, and enjoy your holiday.

Museum 5: New Britain Museum of American Art

I have uploaded my paper for the New Britain Museum of American Art. I absolutely LOVED this museum. It was totally worth the drive! I was not excited about this museum as I thought I didn't like American art. To my surprise, this was my favorite museum to date, and I was disappointed when I had finished going touring the museum. I will certainly be going back!

Final Week!

Hello everyone...

Time has flown by and we now find ourselves in the final week of class... The registrar's office will be looking for grades from me by Friday at the latest....  As a reminder, I'll be looking for 4 papers and 2 photo essays with captions.... The papers should be illustrated with th work you are discussing as well as some general shots of the museum, etc.

Hope you enjoyed having the freedom this class offers and have developed a great habit to keep doing long after the class has ended....

Let me know if you need anything... and have a great Holiday season!

The Met - Final Blog

My pictures for The Met are posted. I had an awesome time - what a great, standard-setting museum in our back yard!!

Update from Cheryl

To date, I have visited every museum on my tentative schedule. Please check out my blog (Cheryl's Blog) to view photos and to see my written reports. I must say that if you have never been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, you're missing a treat. I was totally blown away. Although admission is posted as $20, there is no admission charge but donations are asked. I paid $5 and got in. The museum is massive. It spans 4 city blocks long and 2 blocks wide. I took as many pictures as I could before my battery expired. I will definitely be making another trip there during the summer.

CHERYL VEREEN

Hello Everybody! I'm back!

Hi everyone! I'm back. After suffering from tennis elbow in both arms since October 15th which has prevented me from typing and still limits every aspect of my daily living, I'm well enough to type for a few minutes at a time now. The nerve damage causes severe pain and spasms but I'm thankful that it is a little better thanks to the shots and pain meds I've been receiving. Then I caught swine flu and was away from work, school, and the outside world from October 31st through November 9th. So you can see I'm a little behind and I do apologize. I have been to the first two museums on my tentative schedule and I must say the Whitney museum was impressive. It featured one of my favorite abstract artists-Georgia O'Keefe. I will be posting pictures, comments, and my first paper this week. I'm really excited about writing my first paper. I hope you enjoy my postings.

Museum 2: Yale Art Gallery

I've just posted my next visit to the Yale Art Gallery. I was absolutely amazed at the piece that I chose to highlight on my blog. The sculpture is entitled "Drug Addict". The hyperrealism in this piece just blew me away. Visit my blog and you'll find more pictures of this fabulous piece.

How do I link my blog to this one?

Tentative List of Vists

Museum #1: Yale Art Gallery
Museum #2: Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art
Museum #3: Yale Cener for British Art
Museum #4: Wadsworth Atheneum
Museum #5: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Museum #6: Museum of Modern Art

Above is the list of museums that I plan to visit. I have already visited the Yale Art Gallery and will post my paper to the blog along with my pictures later today. I am looking forward to experiencing everyone's trips through their perspective. I have gone to a few of these museums before, but am always amazed at the new things that I learn on each visit.

Important Information

It has been unusually quiet on this blog for the past few days.  At this point, you should have your blog set up and your tentative list of visits posted.  You need to post your blog address here in this blog so I can find you and create a link for you.  There is no way for me to find you unless you tell me where you are.

I would even expect your first paper to be posted by now as we will be heading into week 3 next week.  Waiting until later to post several things at once is unacceptable.  As you post new work to your blog, you should post a short lead in to it with an image here.

If you are feeling stuck or unsure what to do, please email me directly so I can help you out.

Greetings!

Hello everyone! My name is Cheryl Vereen and this is also my second class with Professor Nevins and my second online class. My first experience was so great that I thought I would try another. I am a senior at Albertus and striving to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in the spring. I am a finance major and considering grad school. I have been employed by the New Haven Board of Education as an assistant teacher in the area of special education for 17 years. I have 4 grown children and 6 grandchildren. Getting my degree is something that I have dreamed of for a very long time. When my children were young, we would visit a museum at least three times a year. I truly loved going to museums and wanted to expose my children to it as much as possible. I haven't been able to visit a museum for a long time. This class will give me a chance to catch up and to expand my visits to museums I've never visited. By coincidence, I just went to the Yale Center for British Art Museum yesterday. We took a group of 16 third graders for an hour and a half trip to the museum to expose them to fine art. We had a great tour guide, but was only able to focus on and discuss only three paintings. All three were at least 250 years old. It really takes a day in a museum in order to have a meaningful experience and you still would not get a chance to fully absorb everything in that length of time. I know I will enjoy this experience. I look forward to viewing everyone's posts. You are invited to view my blog at cvereen77-cherylvereen.blogspot.com.

Salutations

Hello fellow museum-goers! My name is Amanda Gavagan and this is my second class with Prof. Nevins and my umteenth online class at AMC. I love history and absolutely love going to museums so when I found out that I could go to museums and get credit towards my degree, I was ecstatic. I just read through the syllabus and can hardly wait to start going places.
A little about myself - I am a Humanities major and plan on going to grad school after I graduate in May. I haven't figured out where, but since I work full-time during the day, I will need to find something local and accomadating...which I hope I can do. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher, hopefully high school history. Not Social Studies or the world after 1945 - I am interested in medieval history primarily and anything up to the Reformation and Industrial Revolution.
This pic was taken at this year's Renaissance Fair in Hebron. It was my first of hopefully many Renaissance Fairs.
Hello Everyone.

My name is Nancy. I'm an English major here at Albertus. This is my second online course with Jerry Nevins. I took Digital Photography last Mod. At first I was intimidated by all the blogging, and posting photos, but it was surprisingly easy.
I am really excited to start going to the museums on the syllabus. Part of the reason I decided to take this class is that I've been wanting to take advantage of some of the great institutions nearby, but haven't found the time. I think that this class will give me the opportunity to not only get to the museum, but to be able to better appreciate the pieces. I am the last of four children, and as you can imagine, funds and energy were low by the time my parents had me, so museum visits were few and far between. As a result, I try to incorporate many cultural activities into my weekends with my five year old, Ava, so don't be surprised if you see her in some of my shots!
I am looking forward to getting to know you all better!

Hi!

Hi everyone!

My name is Mary Yankee and I'm in my third year at Albertus as a Sociology major with an eye to a Master's in Sociology of Law (I don't want to BE a lawyer - I just want to play one on TV! ^_~) I have seven children (good Catholic girl that I am): Aubrey - 27; Alexis - 25; Athena - 18; Brianna - 12; Michaela - 9; plus two 'acting' children (as they say): Taylor - 17; and Nick - 8 (also the only son I've ever had). I'm a bonafide Interfaith Minister - ordained in Saint John the Divine with all of the pomp and circumstance a girl raised Catholic could want. I attended The New Seminary (http://www.newseminary.org) in NYC for the two years prior to the ceremony - an amazing time in my life. Although I am affiliated with The Interfaith Temple of NY, I do more spiritual counseling than preaching.

I have always been involved in the arts, if not vicariously (my sister is an opera singer and has performed at Carnagie Hall twice and my 25 year old is an artist who had her first showing a few years ago at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven), then through my own boundless curiousity. I have ecletic tastes in most of everything, although I admit I lean towards the more classical pieces than the modern where art is concerned. I'm open to being educated, however, which is why I took this class. After ten years in an abusive relationship and then another four repairing the damage to myself and my children, I feel completely starved of culture and adult conversation ABOUT culture. My boyfriend, while an admirable man and open to anything I want to drag him to, is more interested in the Patriots, the Yankees and anything to do with muscle cars than which tenor has a better tone than Pavarotti (Placido - hands down). I'm looking forward to visiting the museums for which I would otherwise not find time. (It helps to say that I'm being 'graded' on the visit! ~_^) My 25 year old has already announced her intention of joining me, which makes it a real treat!

Looking forward to connecting with all of you and enjoying your company for this leg of my journey....

Hello Everyone!

Hello everyone! I am Genese Calloway and am beginning my last MOD at Albertus! I have been on this undergrad journey since 1998 when I started at Boston College. Long story short, I have wonderfully creative 8yo daughter who wants to be a fashion designer and am engaged to be married in 6 months to a fabulous man who puts up with me. :) I have always been a lover of art, and within the last couple of years, have really taken an interest in the digital world. The picture that I am including is of myself and my fiance and was taken on the East Haven beach during our engagement photo shoot.

I have taken several classes with Jerry, and have loved all the classes so far. I'm sure this will be no different! See you all on the blog!

Welcome to Class!

To get things started, let me tell you a bit about myself.... I have been teaching full time at Albertus Magnus College for the past 30 years and am grateful for the opportunity to spend my life working with students who want to learn more about art. I've been married for the past 34 years, and have 2 wonderful sons, 26 and 29. My older son is married and has an almost 2 year old son. That's Kieran and me at the helm of our sailboat this summer... We were blessed to have another grandson born this past Monday! For now, everyone is together at our house so we are doubly blessed.....

My main interest is photography and I earned an M.F.A. in still photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. At Albertus I teach not only Photography but a range of other courses which include Digital Photography both online and face to face, Foundation Design (2-D and 3-D), Graphic Design, Ceramics, Intro to Computer Art, 20th Century Art History and The Museum Experience.

To learn more about me, take a look around at my web site, http://jnevins.com. You can find a statement of my teaching philosophy (very student centered), syllabi from my other classes, a resume (called a Curriculum Vita in academic circles), tutorials on digital photography issues, portfolios of my work and more.

I look forward to working with you!
